Start at the town hall on the Mozartplatz and walk in a northerly direction along the Steinklüftstrasse up to the Mondsee-Bundesstrasse (main road). Cross this road, and go through the forest up to the second bend of the Obenau service road and cross a small bridge and go uphill through the grove of beech trees until the trail levels off and you arrive at the beginning of the "Steinklüfte". Here there are several marked trails leading through ravines and caves created by rock slides. This part of the walk is very popular with children and is a memorable experience.
At the "Teufelsschlucht" (Devil’s Gorge) the path begins to ascend towards the Plombergstein. After passing the "Felsentempel" the rock temple, from where the stone used for the war memorial in front of the cemetery was obtained, walk along the foot of a vertical cliff face and in a curve up to the saddle between the Plombergstein and the Mitterstein. On this section you have to be sure-footed! After a short ascent southwards you reach the summit. Here you find marvellous views of the entire Wolfgangsee. You’ll find also find a description of the panorama of the peaks and their altitudes.
Go back to the saddle and then westwards down the many steep steps into the Staffelgraben. Be very careful here when ground is wet!!
The climbing garden of the St. Gilgen section of the Austrian Alpine Association is at the foot of the cliff. Climbing of difficulty grades I - VI can be attempted by experienced mountaineers here. From the climbing garden continue over the brook and then on the short service road via the Bartlbauer farmstead to the Wolfgangsee highway. Cross this road and return to the centre of St. Gilgen via the Pöllingerstrasse.
