St. Gilgen - the Mozart Village

There are not many people who know about the connection between Mozart and St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee, 25 km east of Salzburg.

Not one of Mozart’s numerous works was written in St. Gilgen, or did he ever visit the village. Leopold Mozart’s plan, to "pass through St. Wolfgang on our way home to introduce him to his patron Wolfgang and to show him the famous place of birth of his mother, St. Gilgen, that he has never been to", never worked out. Or did Mozart ever keep the promise he made to his sister to "surely embrace you and your husband next spring in Salzburg and St. Gilgen when you will be Frau von Sonnenburg."

Nevertheless, the history of Mozart and this village are inseparable, St. Gilgen was home to three important people in his life. His grandfather worked in St. Gilgen, his mother was born here, and his sister moved to St. Gilgen after she got married.
