During the period 1927 - 1938 a group of artists from Vienna, inspired by their friend Ferdinand Kitt, chose the small hmlet Zinkenbach at Wolfgangsee as their summer, but also winter residence.
They called themselves the "Zinkenbacher Colony of Painters" and numbered up to 27 artists. Ispired by the scenery they were predominantily landscape artists, however they remained faithful to their individuals styles. They represented the important artists of the Austrian art scene between the two World Wars, who originated from the famous Viennese associations of artists, such as "Sezessoir" or "Hagenbund". Some of theme also taught at the Viennese Academy.
This multidimensional artistc aspect is of interest- representing all trends of painting at the time- as much as their heterogeneous composition in a politically critcal time. Politically tolerated and prosecuted, nationalistic, communist and Nazi-orientated artists spent their time together as friends. the caricature "The Paint-ship" demonstrates this clearly.
The group dissolved in 1938 due the escape of most of its members.
The changing exhibitions in this museum are dedicated to the memory of this "lost generation".
