St. Gilgen’s sunny side - circular route

Beautiful hiking-tour with brilliant view-points to St. Gilgen and the Wolfgangsee-region.

The Facts

Start: St. Gilgen town hall in the , Mozart Platz. This can be reached by private car, bus or by ferry from St. Wolfgang, Strobl or Abersee
Length: 6 km/ 3.7 m
Difficulty: easy
Character: 5 km tarmac, 1 km gravel path. .
Resting possibilities: The Batzenhäusl Inn is the ideal place for a rest.

Take the same route as the Steinklüfte-Plomberg tour up to the beginning of the Steinklüfte. Here turn right and when the path leaves the forest and meets the Obenau service road carry on past the Plomberghof until you reach a very sharp left turn in the road. Now go to the right and walk through the grove and then onto the service road leading to the bus-stop on the Mondsee-Bundesstrasse ( main road).

It is worth your while making a little detour here and turning left on the main road. After a few minutes you will arrive at the idyllic and mysterious Krottensee lake which is overlooked by the Hüttenstein Castle. The Batzenhäusl Inn is the ideal place for a rest.

From the bus-stop the route branches off to the right and climbs steeply from the Mühlauerhof up to the Mühlauer heights where there is a wayside shrine and a scenic view of St. Gilgen and the Zwölferhorn mountain. The route leads sharply downhill towards the Mondsee road. Cross the highway and walk along the old Mondsee road to where it merges with the Wolfgangsee circular route and in time you will come back to the centre of St. Gilgen.
