Strobl is situated on the eastern lakeside of the "Abersee" (former name of the eastern part of the Wolfgangsee). The place-name can be derived from the iron-trader's family "Strobl". The coat of arms of the village reminds us of that.
The name "Strobl" approximately means "rough man" and was widespread in the southern Germany. From the late middle Ages till the 17th century Strobl was a point of shelter for pilgrims and carriers. Strobl benefited from Bad Ischl being nearly where the Emperor had his summer residence.
Since the turn of the 20th century the village has been a well-known tourist-centre with remarkable modern facilities. Today Strobl with it's wide, flat lakeside and long natural bathing beach, is a popular and important holiday resort offering a broad range of sports and leisure-time activities.
